Word on the street is skin is in! And by that I mean, Skin by Mented, an Everyday Foundation Collection by Mented Cosmetics. If you’re like me and struggle with oily, cystic acne prone skin then you’re probably cringing at the thought of not wearing maximum coverage foundation. However, I’m here to ease your mind. Keep reading for my review on what possibly could be my new favorite foundation.
If you haven’t heard of Mented Cosmetics then you’re probably living under a rock. The break out cosmetics company has been climbing the ranks of the makeup industry and winning over notable Youtube makeup gurus such as Jackie Aina and Face Over Matter. It’s notable to mention, Mented Cosmetics is a black-owned AND woman-owned company, woohoo!
Mented first popped up on my radar in 2017 when I attended an event of theirs in Harlem, New York. From there they sent me six beautiful semi-matte lipsticks that I wrote a blog post on but never finished. When I received an invitation to their Skin by Mented launch event in Manhattan I knew I had to go. There a professional makeup artist matched me with my perfect shade, and I left with my new foundation and a lip gloss that I’d been wanting since the year before.
If you’ve been following me for a while now then you know that I’ve suffered from hormonal cystic acne, oily skin in the summer, and severe dry patches on my cheeks in the winter. I completed 5 months of Accutane the summer of 2017, and two years later I still find myself battling breakouts, hyperpigmentation, and severe acne scars around my hairline and chin where I tend to pick at my acne the most.
Although the makeup artist at the Mented event matched me very well, I wasn’t very optimistic about being able to recreate the flawless look she left me with but I wanted to try anyway.
My shade in the Skin by Mented collection is L10 (which I must mention is the lightest shade the company carries). The foundation itself comes in an easy to use stick and feels super lightweight on your skin, but the best part is that it’s buildable! I apply my first thin layer all over my face, then go back to build up the foundation over my dark spots. I blend everything in with a damp beauty blender and wallah! Even, glowing skin.
Mented Cosmetics states Skin by Mented is vegan, hypoallergenic, dermatologist tested, and cruelty-free. I find that my skin doesn’t negatively react to the foundation, which is great news since I’m on a skincare journey to be acne free this Summer.
What about my oiliness you ask? I find that like with any other foundation, Skin by Mented needs to be assisted with concealer and powder to last beyond 8-hours of wear. Which is totally fine by me. While the company doesn’t carry an accompanying concealer line yet, you can always go down a few shades of the foundation and use that to conceal. As you might’ve guessed, I can’t do that since I’m already the lightest shade.
When it’s all said and done, Skin by Mented is BusyBeingSha approved! Have you tried any products from Mented Cosmetics? Let’s chat in the comments below!
